Note on Starter Sets and Building Sizes
The Taktik-Trainer starter sets are designed as standard for constructing buildings with a 4 × 5 grid floor plan. The components and quantities included in the sets are configured accordingly for this building size.
The modular design allows the Taktik-Trainer to be individually expanded and used to create larger or different floor plans. For example, if a 5 × 5 floor plan is to be built, additional components are required. The necessary expansion components can be added separately.
The following assembly steps generally describe the setup based on the 4 × 5 grid. For extended floor plans, the assembly principle remains the same; only the number and arrangement of the required components may vary.
1. Base plates
1.1. Turn Over the Base Plates
First, place all four base plates on a clean, level surface with the underside facing up.
You can identify the underside by the felt pads facing upward and the recesses for the plate connectors being visible.
Then arrange the four base plates in two rows and two columns. Together, the plates should form one large square. Push the base plates together so that the edges are as flush as possible and there are no large gaps between the individual plates.
1.2. Insert the Plate Connectors
Now insert the black plate connectors into the designated oval-shaped recesses at each connection point.
The opening for the screw must face upward.
At the same time, each plate connector must be aligned toward the outer edge of the base plate.
1.3. Insert the Screw Connections
A pre-assembled screw connection is used for each connection point. It consists of a screw, two washers, and a nut.
Insert the screw connection from above into the recesses. Make sure that the plate connectors and base plates are positioned between the two washers. The screw is located on one side of the connection and the nut on the other. This ensures that the plate connectors are clamped evenly and that the connection can then be securely tightened.
1.4. Tighten the Screw Connections
First, tighten the nut by hand as far as possible. This will loosely secure the base plates while still allowing them to be slightly adjusted if necessary.
Then tighten the screw connection using two 10 mm open-end wrenches. Hold the nut in place with one wrench and tighten the screw with the second wrench. The connection should be secure without causing the base plates to shift relative to each other.
Repeat this process at all connection points between the four base plates. Regularly check that the base plates remain flush and together form an even square. Finally, check and tighten all screw connections once more.
1.5. Check the Stability
Finally, check all screw connections once more. None of the base plates should be loose or wobble.
Then, together with a second person, carefully turn over the fully assembled base plate. The felt pads should now rest on the surface, with the top side of the base plate facing upward. The base is now ready for the next assembly steps.
2. Position the Pillars for One Floor
Special Case: Basement
If the first floor is being set up as a basement, use the special anthracite-colored basement pillars with two holes on the sides for all outer pillars.
These holes will later be used to attach the supports for the outer basement surround. All interior pillars are installed using the standard pillars as usual.
2.1. Align the Pillars
Prepare all the pillars required for the first floor. The pillars you need will depend on the desired layout of your building.
Each pillar has a small arrow on one side. This serves as an orientation guide and must always face upwards .
Check the orientation of each pillar before inserting it.
2.2. Select the Connector Pins
One connector pin is required for each pillar.
In most cases, the black standard connector pin is used. Only if a pillar will later be positioned above a double wall, use a slotted connector pin instead. This pin has a slot in the center.
Note: Whether a standard connector pin or a slotted connector pin is required depends on the selected building configuration. Use the standard connector pin in all other positions.
2.3. Insert the Connector Pins
Insert the selected connector pin fully into the pillar from below.
When using a slotted connector pin, make sure the slot faces downward when inserting it.
Then briefly check that the connector pin is securely seated in the pillar.
2.4. Position the Pillars
Insert the prepared pillars, with the connector pins already fitted, into the designated holes in the base plate. Carefully press each pillar down until the connector pin is fully seated in the hole.
Position all pillars according to the desired floor plan and make sure that the arrow on each pillar continues to face upward.
2.5. Check the Pillars Are Securely Seated
Finally, check all installed pillars.
All pillars should stand upright, be securely seated in the base plate, and should not lift out on their own. Also check the orientation of all arrows once more. Only then should the doors, walls, and windows be installed.
3. Install the Wall Elements for One Floor
3.1. Select the Wall Elements
First, select the appropriate wall element for the desired position in your building. Depending on the floor plan, different wall elements are available:
Transparent Wall Elements
Provide a view into the building and are particularly suitable for exterior walls.
Opaque Wall Elements
Are particularly suitable for interior walls, as they prevent a view into the room. However, they can also be used in any other position if required.
Transparent Wall Elements with One Opening
Are always installed opposite a door. The opening is used later to insert the door opener.
Transparent Wall Elements with Two Openings
Are installed opposite a smoke curtain. The upper opening is used to operate the smoke curtain, while the lower opening is used to operate the door behind it.
Door Modules
Serve as passageways between rooms or as entrances to the building.
Smoke Curtains
Allow a smoke curtain to be realistically positioned in front of a door.
Window Modules
Are installed at the desired window positions and provide a view into the building. The Taktik-Trainer is available with **standard windows** as well as **basement windows**. Basement windows are approximately **half the height** of standard windows and are used exclusively on the **lowest floor** when it is configured as a basement.
Basement windows are included with the basement extension, but can also be ordered separately and retrofitted.
Service Hatches
Provide access to the smoke generator, heat source, or other components inside the building. Therefore, position the service hatch in the room where these components will be installed whenever possible.
All wall elements are installed between two pillars using the same principle. The only differences are the orientation and connections of the individual elements.
3.2. Align the Wall Elements
Align the selected wall element according to its function before inserting it.
- Opaque Wall Elements can be installed in any orientation.
- Transparent Wall Elements without Openings can also be installed in any orientation.
- Transparent Wall Elements with One Opening are always installed opposite a door. The opening must face downward so that the door opener can be inserted later.
- Transparent Wall Elements with Two Openings are installed opposite a smoke curtain. The upper opening is used to operate the smoke curtain, while the lower opening is used to operate the door behind it.
- Door Modules should be oriented so that the door opens in the desired direction.
- Smoke Curtains are installed so that the side with the orange elements faces the side from which the smoke curtain will later be positioned and operated.
- Window Modules are installed so that the holder for the window insert faces the outside of the building.
- Service Hatches are installed so that the handle faces the outside of the building.
3.3. Install the Slotted Plug (Double Wall Elements Only)
If a double wall element is to be installed, a white slotted plug must be inserted into the corresponding opening in the base plate or intermediate floor before installing the wall element.
This is the opening where a pillar would normally be inserted for a single wall element. Since no pillar is required at this position for a double wall element, the opening is closed with the slotted plug instead.
Align the slot in the plug so that the double wall element can then be inserted along the slot.
The slotted plug prevents smoke from rising between the floors through this opening or from being unintentionally forced outside during positive pressure ventilation.
Important: The slotted plug must be installed before inserting the double wall element. It can only be installed afterward if the wall element is removed again.
3.4. Insert the Wall Elements
Insert the wall element from above between the two pillars and carefully slide it downward until it sits flush on the base plate.
Hint: Insert the wall element between the pillars at a slight angle and then pivot it into its final position. This allows the felt strips attached to the wall element to slide more easily along the pillars without being pushed upward or damaged.
If a wall element is difficult to insert, first check the alignment of the wall element and the pillars. Do not use force to avoid damaging the components.
3.5. Check the Position
After inserting all wall elements, check their alignment once more.
For transparent wall elements in particular, check that the openings are in the correct position and that the door opener can be inserted without any problems later. Only then should the door openers be installed.
3.6. Install the Door Opener – Door
First, hook the short door opener piece with the tube onto the side of the door from which it will later be opened.
Then insert the long door opener rod from the outside through the opening in the transparent wall element and connect it to the tube of the short door opener piece. Finally, check that the door can be opened and closed easily.
3.7. Install the Door Opener – Smoke Curtain
For the white door behind the smoke curtain, installation is carried out in the same way as for a standard door. Use the short door opener piece with the tube and connect it to the long door opener rod.
For the smoke curtain itself, no additional short door opener piece is required. It is already permanently integrated into the smoke curtain and consists of a small white cylinder with a central opening on the side with the orange elements.
Insert the door opener rod with the orange handle through the upper opening of the transparent wall element and into the opening of the white cylinder.
There is also an adjustable white stop on the door opener rod. Slide it along the rod until it rests against the outside of the transparent wall. By adjusting the position of the stop, the final position of the smoke curtain can be set and secured. This ensures that the smoke curtain remains reliably in the desired position after being deployed.
The door behind the smoke curtain can still be opened and closed independently of the smoke curtain via the lower opening in the transparent wall element.
3.8. Insert the Window Inserts
Then insert the white window inserts into the previously installed window modules. Make sure that the window handles are on the outside of the building.
Carefully press the window inserts into the window frames until they are securely in place. The window inserts are intentionally designed to fit slightly tightly. This ensures that they remain securely in the desired position and can be shown either closed or tilted.
To simulate a tilted window, first insert the window insert into the lower section of the window frame only. The upper part remains outside the seal and tilts slightly outward. This creates a realistic tilted position of the window.
Finally, check all windows. The window inserts should sit securely in the frame and, if required, be adjustable between the closed and tilted positions.
3.9. Check the Fit
Finally, check all installed wall elements.
All elements should sit flush between the pillars and should not be tilted or jammed. Then check the function of the doors, smoke curtains, windows, and service hatch before continuing with the assembly of the next floor.
4. Complete the Floor
4.1. Position the Furniture
Before installing the intermediate floor, the current floor should be fully furnished. Now place all furniture, furnishings, and other training elements in the desired positions.
Once the intermediate floor has been installed, access to the floor below will be limited.
4.2. Smoke Generator and Heat Source
If a service hatch has been installed, the smoke generator and heat source can also be conveniently inserted or removed later through the service hatch. Without a service hatch, once the intermediate floor has been installed, this is only possible by removing the floors above.
4.3. Subsequent Changes
If you wish to make changes to a floor that has already been closed off, the floors above can be removed at any time.
To do this, grip the intermediate floor from below and carefully lift the entire floor upward. Removing and carrying a complete floor should always be done by two people to ensure that the floor is lifted evenly and no components are damaged.
Achtung: Attention: If there is a staircase attached to the underside of the intermediate floor, the floor must not simply be placed on a flat surface, as this could damage the staircase.
If the floor still needs to be set down, either:
- a suitable recess must be available in which the staircase can hang freely, or
- the staircase must be removed from the intermediate floor before setting the floor down.
Only then should the floor be placed on a flat surface.
5. Install the Intermediate Floor
5.1. Prepare the Intermediate Floor Segments
Depending on the starter package, the intermediate floor consists of two to four pre-assembled segments. The black connector pins are already inserted, so the individual segments only need to be connected to each other.
Lay out the segments on a flat surface according to their shape. When assembled, they form an intermediate floor in a 4 × 5 grid (H × W). Make sure that all segments are correctly aligned with each other.
5.2. Connect the Intermediate Floor Segments
Connect the pre-assembled intermediate floor segments. The black connector pins are already installed and only need to be inserted into the corresponding slots of the adjacent segments.
Press the segments evenly together until the intermediate floor is assembled flush and forms the 4 × 5 grid.
Special Case: Basement
If the lowest floor is to be configured as a basement, it is recommended to install the pre-assembled basement surround elements before placing the intermediate floor.
The basement surround consists of three pre-assembled elements: two short side elements and one long element for the front of the building. No basement surround is installed on the rear of the building.
The black connectors are already pre-installed in the basement surround elements. Slide the basement surround elements onto the corresponding mounting points on the intermediate floor until they sit flush.
Before placing the intermediate floor on the basement floor, insert the support elements into the designated holes in the outer basement pillars. The support elements will later support the basement surround and must therefore be installed before the intermediate floor is put in place.
We recommend installing the basement surround before placing the intermediate floor. Installation at a later stage is also possible; however, the basement surround elements must then be slid onto the already installed intermediate floor from the outside. If all five pre-installed connectors are used, significantly more force is required. If the basement surround is to be installed and removed frequently, individual connectors can be removed as an alternative. This makes the basement surround easier to install and remove, but results in slightly reduced stability.
6. Assemble the Next Floor
6.1. Install the Intermediate Floor
Before installing the intermediate floor, check once more that all required components have already been placed on the floor below. These include, for example, the smoke generator, heat source, and furnishings. Once the intermediate floor has been installed, access to these components will be limited.
Then carefully lift the pre-assembled intermediate floor and align the openings with the pillars of the floor below. Lower the intermediate floor evenly until it rests fully on all pillars and wall elements. Make sure that the intermediate floor sits flush and is not tilted or jammed.
6.2. Insert the Corner Pillars
Begin assembling the next floor with the four corner pillars. Insert them into the corresponding openings in the intermediate floor and make sure that the arrows on the pillars face upward again.
The corner pillars serve to secure the intermediate floor and make it easier to install the remaining components.
6.3. Install the Intermediate Floor Inserts
Now insert the intermediate floor inserts into the designated openings in the intermediate floor according to your desired building configuration.
You can freely choose between transparent floor panels and gray floor inserts. Transparent floor panels provide a view into the floor below and are particularly suitable if you want it to remain visible during a training exercise.
The gray floor inserts close the openings so that they are opaque and form a solid floor surface. They are often used, for example, as the ground floor above a basement level.
At positions where a staircase will be installed, leave the corresponding opening empty. The staircase will be installed there in the next step.
6.4. Install the Staircase
Insert the staircase from above into the designated opening in the intermediate floor according to your chosen floor plan.
Carefully press the staircase downward until it sits flush with the intermediate floor and is securely in place.
Special Case: Basement
If the green basement surround elements are installed, the corresponding green floor inserts can now be inserted into the designated openings. Simply insert the inserts from above until they sit flush with the basement surround.
Alternatively, light wells can be installed. These are inserted into the designated openings in the basement surround above the basement windows and are also simply inserted from above.
Two different versions of the light wells are available:
Light Well Type 1
Suitable for the front and the right side of the building.
Light Well Type 2
Suitable for the left side of the building.
The respective type is marked on the underside of the light well. Make sure to use the correct light well for the corresponding side of the building.
6.5. Close the Openings
Once all pillars and wall elements of the floor have been fully installed, close all openings in the intermediate floor that are no longer required using the gray plugs.
Openings that are already occupied by pillars, floor inserts, or a staircase remain unchanged. Closing the remaining openings prevents smoke from unintentionally escaping between the floors during training exercises.
6.6. Complete the Floor and Assemble Additional Floors
Once a floor has been fully assembled, place all desired furniture, training elements, and, if required, the smoke generator and heat source. Then install the next intermediate floor.
The next floor is then assembled in the same sequence as before:
- Insert the Corner Pillars
- Install the intermediate floor inserts and, if required, the staircase according to the desired floor plan.
- Insert the remaining pillars.
- Install the wall elements, doors, windows, smoke curtains, and service hatches.
- Close any unused openings with the appropriate plugs.
- Place the furniture, furnishings, and other training elements on the floor.
The next intermediate floor can then be installed, and the process is repeated until the building is fully assembled.
7A. Complete the Building – Flat Roof
7A.1. Install and Secure the Intermediate Floor
Carefully lift the pre-assembled intermediate floor and align the openings with the pillars of the floor below. Then lower the intermediate floor evenly until it rests fully on all pillars and wall elements.
Check that the intermediate floor sits flush and that no components are jammed.
Then secure the intermediate floor by inserting four short gray connector pins into the corner openings. These connect the intermediate floor to the corner pillars below and ensure that the intermediate floor remains securely in place.
7A.2. Install the Intermediate Floor Inserts
Place the final intermediate floor. Insert all desired intermediate floor inserts. You can freely choose between transparent floor panels and gray floor inserts.
Transparent floor panels provide a view into the floor below. Gray floor inserts close the openings and form a solid roof surface.
7A.3. Close the Openings
Then insert the gray short connector pins into all openings where there is a pillar underneath. Close all other unused openings with the gray plugs.
7B. Complete the Building – Gable Roof
7B.1. Connect the Roof Panels
The gable roof is supplied as two pre-assembled roof panels. The roof ridge is already attached to one of the roof panels.
Now connect the second roof panel to the free side of the roof ridge. Use the black connectors for this. Slide the roof panel evenly onto the connectors until both roof panels are flush and form a stable unit.
7B.2. Install the Gable Panels
Then place the two pre-assembled gable panels on the top floor of the building.
Insert the black connector pins into the underside of the gable panels and then place them into the designated openings in the top intermediate floor. Make sure that both gable panels are fully seated and that the window openings face outward.
7B.3. Install the Intermediate Floor Inserts
Now insert the floor inserts into the top intermediate floor according to your desired building configuration.
You can freely choose between transparent floor panels and gray floor inserts. Transparent inserts provide a view into the floor below, while gray inserts create a solid surface.
If a staircase to the attic is to be installed, insert it into the designated opening now.
7B.4. Install the Stairwell Extension
Assemble the stairwell extension. It consists of one straight door element and two angled side walls.
Depending on your building configuration, you may not need both side walls. For example, if the stairwell extension is positioned directly against a gable, the corresponding side wall can be omitted.
Connect the required components using the black connector pins, then insert the completed stairwell extension into the designated openings in the intermediate floor.
7B.5. Close the Openings
Close all remaining open openings in the intermediate floor.
If there is a gable beneath an opening, insert a short black connector pin. Close all other unused openings with the gray plugs. This prevents smoke from unintentionally escaping during training exercises.
7B.6. Prepare the Gable Mounting Points
Insert the short gray connector pins into the designated openings on the top of both gables.
Then insert the small black connectors into the side guides of the gables. These will later connect the gables to the roof panels and ensure a secure fit.
7B.7. Install the Roof Panels
Carefully lift the roof panel with two people and place it evenly onto the two gables.
Make sure that the side connectors fit properly into the designated mounts on the roof panels. If the roof cannot be fully seated immediately, check the position of the connectors and adjust them slightly if necessary. Do not use force.
7B.8. Install the Roof Inserts
Then insert the desired transparent floor panels, gray floor inserts, or dormers into the designated openings in the roof panels.
If a stairwell extension is installed, the door opener for its door must also be installed. Use the transparent roof insert with an opening for this.
Insert the long part of the door opener from the outside through the opening in the transparent roof insert. Then connect the long door opener to the short door opener piece by inserting the long rod into the tube of the short door opener piece.
Then insert the transparent roof insert into the designated opening in the roof panel and hook the short door opener piece onto the door of the stairwell extension.
Finally, check the function of the door opener. The door should open and close easily from the outside.
